TSI Frequently Asked Questions
General TSI Questions
A: It depends on your question. If you have general questions about the TSI process or allowed exemptions, our TSI staff is happy to help with your questions--please email us at TSI@uh.edu.
If you have questions about the TSI assessment, please contact UH Testing Services.
If you have questions about how to proceed with your degree plan if you do not pass the TSI Assessment, please contact your college advisor.
And remember, for all professional messaging, it's always a good idea to include your full name and UH student ID in every email to make sure we can locate your records.
A: Check the “Holds” section (Self Service > Tasks) in your account to see if this requirement has or has not been met. To do this, visit the AccessUH portal and click the myUH Self Service icon.
A: Texas College Bridge and similar college prep courses do not qualify for a TSI exemption at the University of Houston.
While these programs may exempt students from developmental education at institutions partnered with their school district—under Texas Education Code §51.338(e)(f)—they are not recognized as official TSI exemptions by UH. Only exemptions listed in UH’s accepted TSI criteria can qualify for the exemption.
A: If you have submitted your official transcript that contains the information that will exempt you to UH, your transcript may still be in the reviewing process.
For quicker review for TSI purposes, send an unofficial copyof your college transcript to tsi@uh.edu.
A: If you've submitted documents that qualify for a TSI exemption, the TSI staff will manually review your documentation. If your documents confirm that you're TSI complete in the required areas (Math, Reading, and Writing), the TSI hold will be removed from your student account in 48-72 business hours.
Please be advised: Response times from the TSI team may exceed the standard 48–72 business hours during periods of high email volume or peak activity, such as New Student Orientation. We appreciate your patience and will respond as promptly as possible.
A: Once your TSI Remediation Advising is completed and documented, your college will waive your TSI requirement for one semester and lift the TSI hold temporarily so that you can enroll in your classes.
A: We encourage you to submit unofficial documentation to tsi@uh.edu for an unofficial review well in advance of your orientation. After the documents are reviewed, you will be emailed a response about your TSI status.
Please be advised: Response times from the TSI team may exceed the standard 48–72 business hours during periods of high email volume or peak activity, such as New Student Orientation. We appreciate your patience and will respond as promptly as possible.
A: A waiver is a one-semester reprieve from the TSI requirements for a limited selection of cases (e.g., active military, students not seeking a degree) so that students can enroll in courses. Waivers must be renewed every semester to lift the TSI hold.
TSI exemptions are a permanent completion of a particular TSI area based on the set of allowed criteria (e.g, scores or coursework), and once all three sections are complete, the student is considered TSI complete.
TSI Assessment
A: Review the TSI Accuplacer Remote Voucher Notification and Instructions.
For additional questions or help with the voucher request, email UH Testing Services at ets@uh.edu.
A: You may take the TSI Assessment as many times as you like. You are encouraged to take time in between to prepare for the re-take so that you can be successful.
See the TSI information on the UH Testing Services website for more information on the TSI Assessment.
A: You are only required to take the TSI Pre-Assessment the first time you register for the assessment with the University of Houston.
TSI Developmental Ed Courses
A: Yes, if you are TSI incomplete in one or more subject areas (Math, Reading, or Writing), you are required to enroll in developmental education courses at the University of Houston.
Developmental courses are taken alongside your first college-level course in that subject.
Select developmental courses as directed by your Academic Advisor.
A: At the University of Houston, you may not drop the on-level (corequisite) course and remain enrolled in the developmental course alone.
The developmental and on-level courses are linked for enrollment and academic support purposes.
If you're considering dropping a course, talk to your academic advisor first. They can help you explore options like tutoring or possible schedule adjustments.
A: If you pass, you may be eligible to drop the developmental coursework.
However, if you're enrolled in a paired developmental and on-level course, and you pass the TSI before the add/drop deadline, you must:
- Drop both courses, and
- Re-enroll in the on-level course only, if space is available.
⚠️ If the on-level course is full or unavailable, contact your academic advisor right away for help adjusting your schedule.
Submitting Official Scores for TSI
A: If you've forgotten your login information and need to retrieve your TSI score report:
- Contact the Institution or High School Where You Took the TSI
Reach out to the testing coordinator or counselor at the school or institution where you originally took the TSI Assessment. They may be able to help you recover your login credentials or provide a copy of your score report.
If you have additional questions about retrieving your assessment scores, you may email ets@uh.edu for guidance.
A: AP/IB scores can be used for a TSI exemption. Depending on the timing, your scores may not have been awarded credit yet.
Check your myUH student account under Transfer Credit to see whether credit has been awarded. See the Testing Services website for more information.
College Courses & Transcripts
A: IB exam scores alone do not qualify for a TSI exemption.
To be exempt, students must have completed the IB exams and earned the IB diploma. Without the diploma, TSI requirements still apply.

A: As an active duty member of the U.S. armed forces, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the U.S. armed forces you are eligible for a waiver of the TSI requirements each semester you attend.
