The preparation and content of a student’s thesis—whether a master’s thesis, doctoral document, or doctoral essay—are determined by the student’s committee and the policies of their school. Once the thesis is approved by the committee, the process for college and university approval may begin. This process must be completed before a student can be awarded their degree.

The following resources are designed to guide students in the Moores School of Music, the School of Art, and the School of Theatre & Dance through the proper formatting and submission of their thesis:

  • KGMCA Thesis Model:
    • This document should be reviewed carefully. It outlines the required formatting for the thesis front matter (title page, abstract, table of contents, etc.), main body (including tables, figures, and musical examples), and back matter (references, appendix, etc.). All theses must follow this model to be approved by the college’s thesis coordinator.
  • KGMCA Thesis Page Order Overview:
    • A quick-reference guide listing the components of a completed thesis in the correct order. While this information is also included in the Thesis Model, this summary serves as a helpful checklist before submission.

All theses must receive formatting approval from the college’s thesis coordinator, Dr. Marcus Maroney (mkmaroney@uh.edu), before being submitted to the university. Please contact him with any questions or concerns.
