Community Improvements

Student Housing & Residential Life (SHRL) partners with University of Houston facilities and contractors to ensure upgrades and renovations are performed as needed. All upgrades are aimed at ensuring residential communities are conducive to student achievement by ensuring a modern, secure environment where students can gather, study and take part in programming. The projects listed below are not an exhaustive list but rather those that students encounter in their day-to-day activities.

Project Progress

This project entailed updating all public areas within the main residential building, resulting in:
  • Fresh paint within the corridor area, kitchen, and gym areas
  • Replacing fixtures with brighter, energy-efficient LED lighting
  • New and vibrant carpet
  • Kitchen counter and cabinet refinishing
Cameras have been installed inside and around laundry facilities to enhance security in each residence hall.
This project will entail work on all seven floors, including:
  • Replacing furniture and carpet in common spaces
  • Enclosing hallway study areas on each floor
  • Converting current mailbox areas into flexible meeting spaces
This project will entail work on all floors, resulting in:
  • Redesigning main shared areas on the first floor
  • Replacing furniture in common spaces
  • Redesigning laundry rooms with seating and decor
  • Replacing all sky lounge furniture
In partnership with the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, an outdoor fitness court will be erected on the lawn nearest to Oberholtzer Plaza at The Quad.
Automatic doors will be installed at the following locations:
  • SHRL Central Office
  • Laundry rooms at Cougar Village I and II
  • University Lofts 2nd and 3rd floor laundry rooms
